Hakushu Distiller's Reserve is a Japanese single malt from the Hakushu distillery, in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake. It carries no age statement and was one of two Suntory releases in spring 2014.
Both lightly peated and heavily peated malts were used, giving a smoky, herbaceous character. It is bottled at 43% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
Herbs lead on the nose, with peppermint, pine and grassy notes, then cucumber and melon. The palate carries these on, the mint turning sweeter, with a touch of citrus zest. A waft of smoke arrives in the long finish.
