Lagavulin 16 Year Old is an Islay single malt from a distillery founded in 1816 on the island's south coast. It spent sixteen years maturing in oak casks, mainly ex-bourbon and sherry.
Peat smoke runs through it, set against sweetness from the wood and a long, dry finish.
The nose brings peat smoke, seaweed, iodine and a little saltiness, with dried fruit, vanilla and a hint of sherry. The palate is full and oily, with smoke and peat alongside malt, caramel, raisins and spice, and later leather, tobacco and sea salt. The finish is very long and smoky, with light sweetness, spice and pepper.
