This is a 1972 Macallan bottled by Gordon & MacPhail under the Speymalt Macallan name, at full cask strength and not chill-filtered. Gordon & MacPhail is the only independent bottler with Macallan's blessing to use that name, and this is described as the first Speymalt Macallan bottled at cask strength.
The colour is mahogany with a faint green tinge. The whisky can turn cloudy with temperature changes, with time in the glass or when water is added.
The nose is full of rich fruit and candied cane sugar, with oak and smoke, and it opens up in the glass. The palate is dense, heavy sherry, old-school Macallan, with a hint of smoke holding it together.
