Iwai 45 is a blended Japanese whisky from the Mars Shinshu Distillery in Miyada, Nagano, bottled at 45% in a 750ml bottle. The Iwai line is named after Kiichiro Iwai, mentor of Masataka Taketsuru.
The blend is 70% corn and 30% malted barley, matured in ex-bourbon barrels for between two and five years at 798 metres in the Japanese Alps. The standard Iwai is bottled at 40%.
Tasting notes describe honey, ripening pear and barley on the nose, with exotic woods and citrus. The palate brings honey, vanilla, pear and apricot with gentle spice, and the finish carries honey, nougat and white chocolate.
