Mars Iwai Tradition Chateau Mars Wine Cask Finish is a Japanese blended whisky from Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano, made from 70% malted barley and 30% corn. It is non-chill filtered and bottled at 40% in a 750ml bottle.
The base whisky matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, and is then finished in red wine casks that held Pinot Noir and Cabernet at Chateau Mars, the Yamanashi winery of Hombo Shuzo, the distillery's parent company.
The nose brings toasted oats, strawberries, sweet cream, red berries and claret. On the palate are pomegranate molasses, rosemary, pink peppercorn and cinnamon, with honey, caramel and a clear red-wine character. The finish is delicate baking spice.
