Mars 'The Y.A.' #1 is a Japanese blended malt from Hombo Shuzo, bottled at 52% in a 70cl bottle. It vats malt whiskies distilled at the Shinshu (Komagatake) and Tsunuki distilleries, and it is the first edition of the Y.A. series.
Y.A. stands for Yakushima Aging. The whisky was matured, mostly in ex-bourbon barrels, at the Mars Yakushima Aging Cellar on Yakushima Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site off Kagoshima. Hombo Shuzo established the cellar in 2016, and the island's hot, humid climate shapes the maturation.
The nose is fruity, with ginger candy, honey, orange blossom, apricot and yuzu over vanilla cream and clove. On the palate come orange marmalade, white pepper and dried pineapple, with tea smoke and a briny edge. The finish is spiced honey and caramel custard with cold smoke.
