Matsui The Kurayoshi 12 Year Old is a Japanese blended malt whisky from Matsui Shuzo in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture, a sake house founded in 1910. It is bottled at 43% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
Scottish-sourced malt whiskies are blended with Japanese-distilled malt and aged for over 12 years in ex-bourbon American white oak, then cut with soft spring water filtered through volcanic rock. The name comes from Kurayoshi, 'the city of water and green'. It won its category at the World Whiskies Awards 2021.
The nose has flamed orange peel, lemongrass and rye bread dough. The palate offers barley, floral notes, apple and white grape, with nuts, almonds, vanilla and raisins. The finish brings lime, ginger and a whiff of smoke.
