Michter's US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye is a limited release from Kentucky, bottled at 54.1% in a 70cl bottle. It begins as the distillery's Kentucky Straight Rye, which is then moved into a second barrel made from oak air-dried for 18 months.
That finishing barrel is toasted rather than charred, a slow heating intended to bring out the sugars in the wood.
The nose offers toasted marshmallow, caramelised sugar and buttery oak, with baking spices and a touch of cocoa. The palate is full-bodied, with toffee, vanilla bean, roasted nuts and dark chocolate, and rye spice well integrated. The finish is long, with cinnamon, charred oak and a little smoke.
