This is a 13 year old Mortlach, a single malt from Dufftown in Speyside, released as part of the 2021 Special Release. It is bottled at natural cask strength, 55.9% ABV, in a 70cl bottle.
The whisky draws on virgin casks, with new oak showing in a spicy, dry palate alongside vanilla sweetness.
The nose offers freshly oiled wood, savoury and meaty notes with a sweet tartness like roast pheasant with redcurrant jelly, and heather pollen and crushed herbs. Water brings out a hint of lime. The palate is big and smooth with a kick of chilli pepper, and the finish is long and peppery.
