A 23 year old Mortlach from Speyside, distilled in 1997 and bottled by Wilson & Morgan in its Barrel Selection at 56% in a 70cl bottle. The distillery is known for a full-bodied, spicy and intense style, and this one was given a long finish of over seven years in a first-fill Oloroso butt.
The nose is darkly nutty and astringent, with a classic dry sherry profile. The palate is drier and nuttier still, peppery and spicy, malty and chewy, with meaty, toasted notes and a hint of leather. Medicinal herbs and liquorice come through, kept fresh by sour red cherries.
