Mortlach Special Release 2022, named The Lure of the Blood Moon, is a single malt from Dufftown bottled at a cask strength of 57.8%. It belongs to Diageo's Special Releases series, and its packaging takes its inspiration from the blood moon.
The whisky was matured in refill American oak and red dessert wine casks, which wrap Mortlach's meaty style in sweetness, spice and dark fruit.
Blood orange, cranberry, caramelised sugar, oak and wild berries lead the nose. The palate shows dried fruit, dark chocolate, spiced oak, roasted nuts and a slight mineral edge. The finish is long, with dry warmth, sweetness and a hint of smoke.
