Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year Old Pure Malt is named after Masataka Taketsuru, the pioneering Japanese whisky maker. It is aged for 17 years in American oak, sherry and Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
The spirit is distilled in Nikka's Coffey stills, which give a full-bodied mouthfeel, and the whisky matures in the cool, humid climate of the Miyagikyo distillery in the mountains.
The nose shows dried fruit, prune, soft peat smoke, leather and nutmeg. The palate has dark chocolate, dried berries and a hint of espresso, and the finish is smooth, with oak, cocoa and a whisper of smoke.
