Iwai is a blended Japanese whisky from the Mars Shinshu distillery in Nagano Prefecture, bottled at 40% in a 750ml bottle. The distillery stands at 798 metres in the Japanese Alps.
The mashbill is 70% malted barley and 30% corn, double distilled in copper pot stills. The name honours Kiichiro Iwai, the Hombo Shuzo executive who sent Masataka Taketsuru to Scotland.
The nose is vanilla and butterscotch with baked apple, strawberry and honey. The palate is sweet, with ripe pear, apricot, toffee, white pepper and nutmeg. The finish is long, with cereal, caramel and vanilla, ending on white chocolate and nougat.
