The Macallan – Oscuro (70cl, 46.5%)

The Macallan Oscuro is a single malt drawn only from oak casks that previously held oloroso sherry. An unusually high proportion of these casks is filled first, which gives the whisky a deep colour and an intense flavour. It is reduced to 46.5% ABV with natural spring water from wells beneath The Macallan Estate, then rested for at least six months in settling casks so the flavours can marry. It is not reduced again and is filtered at room temperature rather than chilled. The colour is burnished copper. The nose offers ripe berries, dark chocolate, orange and creamy vanilla. On the palate there is delicate fruit, rich sweetness, spice, ripe oranges and a touch of apple, followed by an intense, lingering finish of warm smoky wood.
