Yamazaki 18 Year Old is a Japanese single malt from the Osaka prefecture, bottled at 43% ABV. Yamazaki was established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, and its approach centres on maturation in a wide range of cask shapes and sizes, using local soft water.
The whisky is made from 100% malted barley. Roughly 80% of the blend is spirit aged in sherry casks, and the remainder is matured in American and Mizunara oak. The colour is deep bronze and amber.
The nose shows dates, prunes, blueberry, dark honey, bitter marmalade and vanilla. The palate has manuka honey, caramelised peaches and plum wine, then walnut, cinnamon and black pepper. The finish is long and dry, with citrus peel and a cooling touch of mint.
