A. Smith Bowman Cask Strength Batch 5 is a ten-year-old Virginia straight bourbon, distilled in small batches on a copper still in Fredericksburg and bottled at 68.8% ABV (137.6 proof).
Bowman works in Virginia rather than Kentucky, and each numbered cask strength batch is its own release. Nothing was cut on the way into the bottle, so the concentration comes entirely from the barrel.
On the nose there is caramel, vanilla bean, dark cherry, toasted oak, brown sugar and baking spice. The palate is full-bodied, with crème brûlée, dark fruit, cinnamon and seasoned oak, plus hints of leather and tobacco. The finish is long and warming, with dark caramel, oak spice and vanilla.
