Ardbeg Fermutation is a 13 year old Islay single malt released in 2021 for Ardbeg Committee members, in a 70cl bottle at 49.4% ABV. It began with a broken boiler in 2007, which left six washbacks fermenting far longer than usual. That wash was distilled separately and then matured in ex-bourbon casks. It is non-chill-filtered and of natural colour.
The nose is fresh, floral and herbal, with smoked orange, grapefruit, menthol and peppermint. With water come diesel, tar, fresh paint and aniseed. The palate is lively, with malty biscuit, aniseed, cardamom, antiseptic lozenges, sweet mint toffee and cigar ash. The finish is long and salty, with mint, tar, oak tannin and leather.
