Ballechin 2003 is a 13 year old smoky Highland single malt, bottled at 54.6% in a 70cl bottle. It spent 11 years in bourbon casks, followed by a further 24 months in Blaufränkisch Mariental casks from the Burgenland winemaker Ernst Triebaumer. The outturn was 435 bottles.
The nose is soft for the strength, with dry smoke and, after a few minutes, the tannins of the Blaufränkisch. On the palate, sweet smoke gives way to light maritime, iodine notes, then barrique and ripe smoked blackberry. The finish is long and smoky, with the red wine returning at the end.
Tasting Notes
