A 38 year old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, distilled in 1984 and bottled in March 2023 at 53.3% by Gordon & MacPhail in its Connoisseurs Choice range. It is a single cask, refill American hogshead 3122, which filled 150 bottles.
The long maturation has turned the distillery's originally strong coastal smokiness into an elegant, complex structure. It is bottled at natural cask strength, with no colouring and no chill-filtering.
The nose has grilled pineapple, ripe banana and mango lassi with a fine, lasting veil of smoke. The palate is creamy and full, with sweet pear, citrus, a savoury note and fresh mint. The finish is very long, with glowing campfire embers, smoke and sharp citrus.
