Cardhu Gold Reserve is a Speyside single malt made from carefully chosen toasted oak casks. Matthew Crow, the blender, brings them together into a sweet, full-bodied malt with a spicy aftertaste. It is bottled at 40% in a 70cl bottle.
Sweet fruit, dark chocolate, toffee and spice shape its character, with a soft texture and a drier counterpoint to the sweetness.
The nose opens gently with tinned fruit salad, apple and orange, pear and barley sugar, then marzipan, toffee and milk chocolate. The palate is stronger and drier, with orange zest, cedar wood and cocoa. The finish is of medium length, warming and peppery, with menthol, cocoa and a little salt.
