Craigellachie 17 Year Old is a Speyside single malt from a distillery known for its meaty character, made with oil-fired malt and old-fashioned worm tub condensers. It matured for 17 years in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and is bottled at 46% ABV in a 75cl bottle, without chill-filtration or added colouring.
The extra time in oak softens the savoury, faintly sulphury edge and brings forward roasted pineapple, vanilla and oak spice. The colour is deep golden amber, with a thick, waxy mouthfeel.
The nose combines baked apple, roasted pineapple and vanilla with a meaty undertone and a hint of struck match. On the palate are tropical fruit, honey, toasted oats, clove, liquorice and subtle wood smoke. The finish is long and waxy, with sweet oak, dried fruit and gentle smoke.
