George Remus Highest Rye is a straight bourbon from Indiana, aged for six years in new charred oak barrels and bottled at 54.5% ABV. It is non-chill-filtered and natural in colour.
The mash bill is 51% corn, 39% unmalted rye and 10% malted rye, which puts rye at the front of the recipe. The brand presents it as a tribute to the strong presence of rye in American whiskey before Prohibition.
On the nose there is baking spice, dried cherry, red currant, vanilla and toasted oak. Black pepper and ginger lead the palate, followed by cherry, plum and maple syrup. The finish is medium to long, with spice settling into spiced fruit and oak.
