This is a 13-year-old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for its Discovery range at 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle.
The whisky spent thirteen years in bourbon casks chosen by the bottler. Caol Ila is made from malted barley peated to roughly 30 to 35 parts per million, and the American oak softens and sweetens its coastal smoke.
The nose offers vanilla, apple, apricot and cured meat, with peat smoke in the background. On the palate come white peach, lemon, sponge cake, oatcakes and smoked cheese, with a briny edge. The finish is long, with burnt sugar, earthy peat and a slightly maritime aftertaste.
