Hakushu 12 Year Old is a peated Japanese single malt from the Hakushu distillery, owned by Suntory. The distillery stands in the forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake and was built in 1973, with a second building, Hakushu Higashi, added in 1981. It is bottled at 43% in a 70cl bottle.
The profile is fresh and foresty. The nose brings toasted barley, seed and nut loaf, chopped almonds and a little barrel char, with milk chocolate and dried grass adding sweetness. The palate has more fruit, yet stays rich, herbaceous and grassy, with a waft of smoke. The finish is fairly short, with orange peel and a touch of minerals.
