The Iberian is a ten-year-old single malt from Hellyers Road in Tasmania, bottled at 48.3% in a 70cl bottle without chill-filtration or added colour.
It combines two parts matured separately: one entirely in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, the other in Australian port casks more than 50 years old. This is a marriage of two whiskies rather than a finish, and the name points to the Iberian origin of both wine traditions. Wood sugars added sweetness that shows in the finish.
The nose recalls fresh brioche, stewed fruit and dates, with orange and cocoa. The palate brings dark chocolate, dark syrup and spice against fresh mandarin, with lasting fruitcake sweetness. The finish is nutty with a noticeable texture, then spiced orange marmalade and restrained wood.
