This is a five-year-old Irish whiskey from Hinch, part of its Connoisseur Collection. It was matured in ex-bourbon casks and then given a six-month finish in former Madeira wine casks. It was bottled on 5 October 2023 at 46% ABV, with no added colouring.
The Madeira finish is what sets it apart, adding fruity sweetness and spice to the bourbon-cask base.
The nose is of warm wood spices, candied orange peel, a hint of chocolate orange and sandalwood. On the palate come orange marmalade, stewed peaches, buttered toast, chopped hazelnuts and chocolate praline. The finish brings toasted hazelnut, a little cracked pepper and red grapes.
