Ichiro's Malt Chichibu 'On The Way' was bottled in 2019 and marks the distillery's progress towards its first 10-year-old single malt, due in 2020. Only 11,000 bottles were released, at 51.5%.
The whisky is a vatting of 52 casks, each aged between five and ten years. Most are first-fill ex-bourbon, with a few second-fill chibidaru casks and hogsheads with mizunara heads, and some peated whisky is included.
Green apple, grape and pineapple meet coconut cream on the nose, with a hint of earthiness. The palate is fruity and creamy, turning to sweetness and gentle spice. The finish is smooth and lingering, with fruit and Japanese oak.
