Kilkerran 12 Year Old is a single malt made at the Glengyle Distillery in Campbeltown. The distillery was founded in 1872, lay dormant for nearly 80 years and was revived in 2004 by J & A Mitchell, owners of Springbank.
The whisky is lightly peated, at around 15ppm, and matured in a vatting of 70% ex-bourbon and 30% ex-sherry casks. Long fermentations in wooden washbacks give a spirit with a rich, oily texture.
The nose is zesty, with lemon cheesecake, pear drops and marzipan, then leather, clotted cream and a little campfire smoke. The palate combines honey, green apple and clove with a briny edge, and the finish moves from butterscotch to earthy peat smoke.
