This is the first whisky from the new Lindores Abbey Distillery, bottled in 2021 as a Lowland single malt in a run of 12,750 bottles. It has spent three years in bourbon, sherry and wine casks and is bottled at 46% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
The name is the year 1494 in Roman numerals, the date from which the monks of Lindores Abbey are known to have made aqua vitae from barley. The distillery at Newburgh, between Perth and St Andrews, began running spirit again in 2017.
The nose offers citrus and orange with floor polish, silage, chocolate, soft toffee and vanilla. The palate is spicy with nutmeg, clove and pepper, then creamy caramel, vanilla and dark fruit. The finish is medium, fruity, with oak, peppermint and cream.
