First-fill sherry hogshead
This Linkwood was distilled on 3 January 1956 and matured for sixty years in a single first-fill sherry hogshead of European oak. It spent its early years in Warehouse No. 5 at the distillery, then moved to Gordon & MacPhail's warehouse in Elgin in 1968. It was bottled on 22 June 2016 for the Private Collection at a natural cask strength of 49.4%, filling 56 decanters of 70cl, each in a wooden box. The colour is chestnut to mahogany. Warm and sweet on the nose, with baked apple, raisins, toffee and vanilla sauces, then dark chocolate and orange tart. The palate is soft and full, with dark honey, apple strudel and fruit cake against a lively acidity. The long finish brings dried fruit, oak, candle wax and a little smoke.
