Mortlach 13 Year Old is a 2021 Special Release from the Dufftown distillery known as the Beast of Dufftown. It is a single malt in a 70cl bottle at 55.9% ABV. Its character was shaped by virgin casks.
The nose has freshly oiled wood and savoury, meaty notes, with roast pheasant and redcurrant jelly, heather pollen and crushed herbs. Water brings out lime. The palate is smooth and vanilla-sweet, turning spicy-dry with new oak and a kick of chilli pepper. The finish is long and peppery, with fruit and a floral, herbal note once water is added.
