This is a 15 year old Mortlach from the Distillery Label range by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, in a 70cl bottle at 46% ABV. It was matured in sherry casks.
Mortlach, known as the Beast of Dufftown, shows a heavier, more robust side of Speyside, and sherry casks suit it well.
The nose is malty with a woodland hedgerow freshness, then delicate sherry, toffee, sweet liquorice and orange marmalade. The palate recalls Black Forest cake, with blackcurrant jam, maraschino cherry, vanilla and fresh orange. The finish is well rounded, with candied citrus, oak and a malty edge.
