The Katana's Edge is a limited Mortlach single malt from the Dufftown distillery, released in 2023 within the Spirited Xchange collection of the Diageo Special Releases. The collection looks at international craft and culture, and for Mortlach the focus is Japan.
Part of the whisky was finished in casks that previously held Kanosuke Japanese whisky, and the rest in ex-Pinot Noir wine casks. The wine casks are meant to balance the sweetness. It was bottled at 58% cask strength, without colouring or chill-filtering.
The nose is mild and fresh, with ripe melon, pear and fruit jellies over light leather and spice. The palate is dense, soft and fruity, with a gentle savoury note. The finish is long, dry, spicy and warming.
