This is a four-year-old Kentucky straight rye from New Riff in Newport, bottled in bond at 50% ABV in a 70cl bottle. The mash bill is 95% unmalted and 5% malted rye, so rye supplies the malt as well as the bulk of the grain.
It is matured in new 53-gallon oak barrels that are toasted and charred. Bottled in bond means it comes from a single distillery and a single distilling season and is aged in a supervised warehouse. It is non-chill-filtered and has no added colouring.
The nose shows mint, black pepper and vanilla with a little orange. The palate moves from cinnamon and toffee to firm rye spice, caramel and toasted oak. The finish is spicy, with vanilla buttercream and brown sugar.
