This is a 42-year-old Islay single malt from Port Ellen, distilled on 26 January 1981 and matured throughout in refill sherry cask number 290. Gordon & MacPhail bottled it in February 2023 at 52.5% for its Private Collection, filling 181 bottles in 70cl size. Port Ellen stopped production in 1983.
The nose combines peat smoke with blackberries, redcurrants and dates, backed by oak, roasted nuts and orange. The palate is maritime and dense, with seaweed, raspberries and sultanas, while smoke, dark fruit and aged oak spice work together. The finish is very long, with lingering peat smoke, dark berry sweetness and oak.
