This is a 32 year old Port Ellen, distilled in 1979 and issued in 2012 as the 12th release in the annual Diageo Special Releases. It was matured in American and European oak casks and bottled at 52.5% ABV.
Only 2,964 bottles were produced for worldwide circulation, with around 750 of them for the UK.
The nose brings boggy, mossy peat, tarry oil, seaweed, chilli flake heat and damp earth. On the palate there is seaweed on a barbecue, salt, tarry coal-like peat and roasted green pepper. The long finish adds some sweetness and spicy citrus to brine, peppercorns and chilli heat.
