A 37 year old Port Ellen distilled in 1978, the 16th release in the annual Diageo Special Releases series. It is a limited edition Islay single malt in a 70cl bottle, matured in bourbon oak casks, with 2940 bottles produced. Port Ellen is a silent distillery, and this release is described as big, dark, tarry and savoury. The nose is earthy and coastal, with fishing nets, damp canvas, shoe polish, leather and waxed paper. The palate brings saltwater, liquorice, ashes, camphor and light pepper. The finish is long, with earth, peat, verbena and burnt sugar.
