This is a 40 year old Port Ellen single malt from Douglas Laing's Xtra Old Particular Black Series. It was distilled in 1979 and aged for 40 years in a single refill butt, then bottled in January 2020 at 49.6%. Just 299 bottles were produced.
Port Ellen, on Islay, was established in the 1820s, first as a malt mill and a few years later as a distillery. It was mothballed in 1983, although its maltings still supply the other Islay distilleries.
