Sam Houston Small Batch Reserve is a Kentucky straight bourbon, distilled and aged in Bardstown, and the return of the Sam Houston brand under Western Spirits Beverage Company. It is made from 74% corn, 18% rye and 8% malted barley, and matured in new American white oak barrels with a #4 char.
It is bottled at 108 proof (54%), a nod to Sam Houston's age of 54 when he served in the U.S. Senate. Each batch is blended from a small group of hand selected barrels, and every 750ml bottle is individually numbered and marked with its batch size.
The nose is oak, leather and caramel over dark fruit. The palate is full and layered, with toasted grain, oak, light vanilla and pronounced rye spice. The finish is medium, with wood char, baking spice and mild honey.
