Scarabus is Hunter Laing's Islay single malt, named after a mystical area of the island; the name means 'rocky place' in Old Norse. This 10 year old comes in a 70cl bottle and was matured for a decade in a combination of refill, ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks.
The nose is soft phenolic peat smoke, slightly bitter, with Lapsang Souchong, tar, sea spray and toasted brioche, and lemon and honey sweetness behind. The palate brings golden syrup, vanilla, a slow rumble of peaty smoke and crushed peppercorns. The finish is of medium length, with sweet peat, umami and floral freshness.
