The Rheban is a cask strength Tasmanian whisky from Spring Bay Distillery, bottled at 58% in a 70cl bottle. It was matured in French oak casks that previously held Apera, Australia's answer to sherry.
It comes from a single cask and only 67 bottles were filled, each one hand-filled and hand-labelled at the distillery.
The nose shows warm caramel, poached pears and old leather, then golden sultanas, walnut oil and a hint of Pedro Ximenez. The palate is full-bodied and oily, with dried apricot, floral honey, clove and salted cashew, plus a citrus lift. The finish is peppery and gently tannic. A few drops of water bring out nougat and sandalwood.
