Van Winkle Special Reserve 12 Year Old is a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon, bottled at 45.2% (90.4 proof) in a 750ml bottle by the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in Frankfort. Wheat rather than rye is the secondary grain alongside corn and malted barley.
It spends twelve years in new charred oak and pours a deep burnished amber.
The nose offers caramel, vanilla and dried fruit over toasted oak, leather and light baking spice. On the palate it is full and smooth, with butterscotch, brown sugar, dark cherry and soft cinnamon over integrated oak. The finish is long, mellow and warming, with caramel, oak and lingering sweetness.
