Yamazakura Pure Malt is a Japanese whisky from Sasanokawa Shuzo, made in collaboration with Shin Group for this Singapore edition. It is aged in sherry casks from slightly peated malt and bottled at 50% in a 70cl bottle, with no added colour and no chill-filtering.
Sasanokawa Shuzo was founded in 1765 and received its whisky licence in 1946. It is the oldest whisky distillery in the Tohoku area. The name joins yama, meaning mountain, and sakura, the cherry tree.
The nose offers pear, caramel and cherry pie with a hint of spice. The palate brings sherry, creamy vanilla, nuts and smokiness, and the finish is lightly peated, malty, spicy and honeyed.
