Askeim is a new brand from the Swedish distillery Smögen, built around the flavours of old, classic barley varieties. This 8 year old is its first release, bottled at 57.7% ABV in a 50cl bottle.
It is made from a lightly peated version of Golden Promise barley, a variety that was dominant in the 1970s. The whisky matured in small first fill bourbon quarter casks. Smögen distils peated malt and matures it on site in Hunnebostrand.
The palate is full of flavour and viscous, with very malty and fruity notes, plus creamy fudge, ginger and toasted oak.
