First-fill Burgundy wine hogshead
Ballechin is the heavily peated single malt made at Edradour near Pitlochry. This 17 year old was distilled in November 2005 and matured entirely in eight first-fill Burgundy hogsheads, casks 327 to 334, rather than being given a wine finish. It was bottled in July 2023 at a natural cask strength of 53.5%, without chill-filtering or added colour, and yielded 2,103 bottles of 70cl. The nose brings dark berries, cherries and grapes with raisins, nuts and gentle, earthy smoke. On the palate, marked peat smoke meets blackberries, blackcurrants and plum compote, with walnuts, oak spice and fruity barbecue sauce. The long finish carries red wine fruit, dark chocolate, salted caramel, leather and tobacco.
