Balvenie 12 Year Old Montilla Wine Seasoned Cask is part of the Curious Casks collection from The Balvenie in Speyside, created under Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie. It is bottled at 47.3%, non-chill filtered, in a 70cl bottle.
The whisky spends 12 years in traditional American oak casks, then is finished in European oak butts seasoned with Montilla, a sweet dessert wine from Andalusia in Spain. Its colour is deep gold.
The nose is delicate and fresh, with barley sugar turning to liquid honey and soft toasted oak. The palate opens with sugared sweetness, moving to rich vanilla oak, warm spice and dried apricots. The finish is long and refreshingly sweet, balancing Montilla fruit with oak.
