Blood Oath Pact No. 9 is the 2023 release in John Rempe's annual Blood Oath series, a Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 49.3% ABV. Every Pact is a one time blend, and this one has a deep dark amber colour.
It marries three bourbons distilled to the same mashbill of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley: a 16 year old, a 12 year old and a 7 year old. Only the 7 year old component was finished, in Oloroso sherry casks from southwest Spain. Production was 51,000 bottles.
The nose has sweet sherry, ripe and dark fruit, brown sugar, maple and a peppery edge, with leather and vanilla. On the palate there are dark fruit, molasses and chocolate over honey and caramel.
