This is a 44-year-old Bunnahabhain from the Director's Special series, bottled by Elixir Distillers under The Single Malts of Scotland. It was distilled in 1975 and bottled in 2020, after maturing in a single sherry butt that had already held whisky. The cask gave 492 bottles.
It was bottled at its natural cask strength of 42.4%, without chill-filtration or added colour, in a 70cl bottle.
The nose brings plum wine, quince jam, caramel cake and marshmallow, with gingerbread and cardamom tea. The palate is juicy, with mint, damp oak, mandarin, mango and heather honey set against tobacco and rooibos. The finish is long, with menthol, soft liquorice and dusty wood.
