This is a 26-year-old Clynelish from the Highlands, distilled in 1995 and matured in a refill sherry butt. Whisky Sponge bottled it as Edition No.39, Phase II of its Descent of Sponge series, at a natural cask strength of 57.7% ABV in a 70cl bottle.
Clynelish's waxes, oils and minerals are joined by soft dark fruits, tobacco and hessian from the refill sherry cask. The nose brings porridge, sunflower oil, waxed paper, golden raisins and apricot. The palate offers oranges, apricot, ginger and leather over a greasy, waxy layer, and the finish is long and minty, with tangerine and drying chalk.

Oranges, apricots, ginger and leather, a lightly herbal edge, greasy waxy citrus, drier towards the end
Rather long and minty, with tangerine and drying chalk
