Vellichor is a blended Scotch from Compass Box, created by whiskymaker James Saxon to echo the smell of an old bookshop: leather, polished wood and aged pages. The name is a word coined by John Koenig.
Highland Park makes up 38.9% from eight re-charred hogsheads, with 29.3% blended malt and 15.6% blended Scotch, both from refill sherry butts, 12.1% Macallan from first-fill bourbon barrels and 4.1% Caol Ila. A total of 3,246 bottles were filled in January 2022 at 44.6%, with natural colour and no chill-filtration.
The nose offers leather and furniture polish with a dry, dusty note. The palate is malty, with tropical fruit, sherry and soft peat, and the finish is long, with dried pear, apple and a hint of mint.
